SEVOFLURANE (Generic for ULTANE) Lifestyle Interactions

  • Sevoflurane 100%, Inhalation vapour, liquid

    Interaction: Alcohol
    Severity: Major
Notes for Consumers: Sevoflurane is only used in a hospital or clinic during surgery to make you unconscious (sleep) during the procedure. Patients who drink alcohol-containing drinks on a regular basis may require higher doses of Sevoflurane and are at increased risk of developing severe liver side effects. Limit or avoid Alcoholic beverages before and after surgery. Discuss your drug regimen and alcohol drinking habits with your health care provider before any procedure or surgery.
Notes for Professionals: Anesthetic requirements may be increased for sevoflurane with chronic ethanol ingestion. The cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2E1 isoenzyme appears to be a predominant enzyme responsible for human oxidative sevoflurane metabolism. Ethanol has been shown to induce CYP2E1. Additionally, the concurrent use of sevoflurane in patients with chronic ethanol ingestion may increase the risk of hepatotoxicity.
