TIOPRONIN (tye oh PROE nin) binds with cystine in the body. It is used to prevent kidney stones in patients with cystinuria.
This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.

Take this medicine by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take this medicine on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Do not take with food. Take your medicine at regular intervals. Do not take it more often than directed. Do not stop taking except on your doctor's advice.
Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. While this drug may be prescribed for selected conditions, precautions do apply.
Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

You may need to be on a special diet while you are taking this medicine. Talk to your doctor about the foods that you eat and the vitamins that you take. Also, ask your doctor how much fluid you need to drink. Drink the recommended amount of fluid each day to stay hydrated and to help prevent kidney stones.
Do not breast-feed an infant while taking this medicine.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible:
-allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
-dark urine
-fever
-joint pain
-mouth sores
-redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
-signs and symptoms of low red blood cells or anemia such as unusually weak or tired; feeling faint or lightheaded; falls; breathing problems
-swelling of the ankles, feet, hands
-swollen or painful glands
-trouble passing urine or change in the amount of urine
-unusual bruising or bleeding
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (Report these to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome.):
-changes in taste
-diarrhea
-nausea, vomiting
-tiredness
-upset stomach
-wrinkling or thinning of the skin

Keep out of the reach of children.
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep this medicine in the original container. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
