  • Metronidazole 1%, Topical cream

    Interaction: Alcohol
    Severity: Severe
    Notes for Consumers: Do not drink alcoholic beverages or use medicines that contain Alcohol as an ingredient while taking Metronidazole. This includes products containing Propylene Glycol, a type of alcohol. Continue to avoid Alcohol and Propylene Glycol for about 3 days after stopping Metronidazole. When products containing Alcohol (including medicines with a significant amount of alcohol in them) or Propylene Glycol are taken by patients receiving Metronidazole, an extremely unpleasant reaction is likely. This reaction includes flushing, throbbing headache, nausea, vomiting, sweating, thirst, and other effects that can be severe and last from 30 minutes to several hours. Interactions with Metronidazole vaginal or topical skin products are not likely.
    Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to discontinue alcoholic beverages and other forms of alcohol (including medicines with significant alcohol content and any products containing propylene glycol) before, during, and up to 3 days after therapy with systemic metronidazole. Disulfiram-like side effects including nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, headache, flushing, and abdominal cramps may occur if used together.
