SPIRONOLACTONE (speer on oh LAK tone) treats high blood pressure and heart failure. It may also be used to reduce swelling related to heart, kidney, or liver disease. It helps your kidneys remove more fluid and salt from your blood through the urine without losing too much potassium. It belongs to a group of medications called diuretics.

  • Spironolactone 5mg/1mL, Oral suspension

    • Interaction: Foods containing licorice
    • Severity: Major
    • Notes for Consumers: Licorice candy and foods containing licorice extract should be avoided when taking Spironolactone. Licorice can counteract (work against) the beneficial diuretic (resulting in water and sodium loss) actions of Spironolactone. If you are taking Spironolactone to treat high blood pressure or edema, and notice an increase in leg or ankle swelling (edema) or an increase in your blood pressure, tell your health care provider.
    • Notes for Professionals: Licorice extract, which contains glycyrrhizic acid, possesses aldosterone-like properties. Thus, licorice candy and foods containing licorice extract should be avoided by patients taking spironolactone in order to not antagonize the drug's therapeutic actions.

    • Interaction: Alcohol
    • Severity: Moderate
    • Notes for Consumers: It is best to limit your intake of alcohol while taking this drug. Alcohol can increase the risk for low blood pressure and dizziness. If the blood pressure drops too low, you may feel dizzy or faint, in some cases falls or fainting may occur. Do not drive or operate machinery, or perform other hazardous tasks if you have been taking alcohol with this drug.
    • Notes for Professionals: Patients should be cautioned that ingesting alcohol can increase the chance of low blood pressure and dizziness when taking spironolactone. Patients may wish to limit alcohol ingestion while taking this drug and should be monitored for signs or symptoms of hypotension, including postural hypotension and dizziness.
