VERTEPORFIN (VER te PORE fin) is used to treat certain eye diseases, including macular degeneration, pathologic myopia, and presumed ocular histoplasmosis. It is activated by light. This medication is given, then the eye(s) are treated with a laser light. This is called photodynamic therapy (PDT). This treatment results in a slowing of the disease and helps to maintain vision.

    Notes for Consumers: Do not take ingest Ethanol (such as Alcoholic beverages) while you are receiving photodynamic therapy with Verteporfin. Ethanol may decrease the beneficial actions of Verteporfin. Verteporfin Injection is only used in a hospital or clinic. Discuss your drug regimen with your health care provider before receiving photodynamic therapy with Verteporfin.
    Notes for Professionals: Compounds that inactivate oxygen species or scavenge free radicals such as ethanol would be expected to decrease the effects of verteporfin photodynamic therapy.
