TRIAMCINOLONE (trye am SIN oh lone) reduces swelling, redness, itching, and rashes caused by skin conditions, such as eczema. It works by decreasing inflammation of the skin. It belongs to a group of medications called topical steroids.

  • Triamcinolone Acetonide 0.05%, Topical ointment

    • Interaction: Grapefruit juice
    • Severity: Moderate
    • Notes for Consumers: Limit your intake of grapefruit and grapefruit juice during triamcinolone treatment. Ingesting large or regular quantities of grapefruit juice or grapefruit may increase the risk for side effects from Triamcinolone. Tell your health care provider if you have side effects like roundness of the face, high blood pressure, weight gain, increased hunger or thirst, extreme irritability or hallucinations, fainting, stomach pain, or water retention as soon as possible. Topical skin products containing triamcinolone are not expected to interact.
    • Notes for Professionals: Grapefruit or grapefruit juice may inhibit the CYP3A4 metabolism of triamcinolone, resulting in increased plasma triamcinolone concentrations and reduced serum cortisol concentrations. It is possible that a patient could experience increased corticosteroid effects including, but not limited to, Cushing syndrome and adrenal suppression. Advise patients to limit or avoid grapefruit juice during triamcinolone therapy. Monitor for excessive cortcosteroid effects, like Cushing's syndrome or adrenal suppression.
