PARICALCITOL (par i KAL si trole) treats an overactive parathyroid gland (hyperparathyroidism) in people with kidney disease. It works by lowering parathyroid hormone levels in your body, which can support bone health. It is a form of vitamin D.

    • Interaction: Grapefruit juice
    • Severity: Moderate
    • Notes for Consumers: Grapefruit juice and grapefruit-containing foods may increase the side effects of Paricalcitol (Zemplar). Do not significantly increase grapefruit juice intake while taking this drug, or avoid grapefruit juice if possible. Side effects from Paricalcitol include dizziness, fatigue or sleepiness, loss of appetite, dry mouth or metallic taste, nausea or vomiting, stomach cramps, constipation or diarrhea, ringing in the ears, loss of balance, skin rash, muscle or joint pain, or general irritability. Report any unexplained or persistent side effects to your health care provider.
    • Notes for Professionals: Paricalcitol is partially metabolized by CYP3A4. Care should be taken when dosing paricalcitol strong CYP3A4 inhibitors; dose adjustments of paricalcitol may be required. Plasma PTH and serum calcium and phosphorous concentrations should be closely monitored if a patient initiates or discontinues therapy with a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor, such as grapefruit juice.
