PAPAVERINE (pa PAV er een) is a vasodilator. It relaxes the blood vessels which makes it easier for blood to pass through them. It is used to treat certain conditions that cause blood vessels to spasm. This medicine may also be used to relieve the spasms associated with urinary tract, gallbladder or stomach.

    Notes for Consumers: Avoid alcohol-containing beverages while you are taking Papaverine. Side effects such as breathing problems, confusion, trouble staying alert, dizziness, hallucinations, or changes in vision may result. Do not drive or operate machinery if you are drinking alcohol-containing beverages.
    Notes for Professionals: Papaverine is a benzylisoquinoline alkaloid of opium and may have synergistic effects with potent CNS depressants such as alcohol (ethanol), which could lead to enhanced sedation.
