NITROGLYCERIN (nye troe GLI ser in) prevents and treats chest pain (angina). It works by relaxing blood vessels, which decreases the amount of work the heart has to do. It belongs to a group of medications called nitrates.

    Notes for Consumers: Side effects from Nitroglycerin such as dizziness, flushing, low blood pressure, or headache may get worse if you take Ethanol or drink Alchohol-containing beverages. You may become dizzy or feel faint while taking Nitroglycerin and Alchohol together; do not stand or sit up too quickly. To avoid an interaction, avoid alcohol-containing beverages while you are taking Nitroglycerin. If you experience dizziness (lightheadedness) which does not go away, fainting or falling spells, or shortness of breath while taking Nitroglycerin, contact your physician immediately.
    Notes for Professionals: Alcohol may increase the frequency of nitroglycerin-related adverse effects including lightheadedness on standing, especially just after rising from a recumbent or seated position. The vasodilating effects of nitroglycerin may also be additive with those of alcohol.
