    Notes for Consumers: In general, you should avoid alcoholic beverages while taking Valerian. You may feel drowsy or more tired when taking this combination. Do not drive or operate machinery if you are drinking alcohol-containing beverages.
    Notes for Professionals: Patients should be advised to avoid alcoholic beverages when consuming valerian, Valeriana officinalis. Valerian has been shown to have sedative properties, binding at barbiturate binding sites and inhibiting GABA breakdown within the CNS. Valerian may potentiate the effects of ethanol, particularly when valerian is combined with other sedative or relaxant herbs. A case report documents an interaction of valerian, ginkgo, and alcohol.
