DIPYRIDAMOLE (dye peer ID a mole) is used in patients who have had heart valve replacements. It prevents blood clots and reduces the risk of complications.

    • Interaction: Caffeine-containing Foods/Beverages
    • Severity: Major
    • Notes for Consumers: Caffeine may decrease the actions of Dipyridamole when it is used during heart testing. Discuss your Caffeine intake (including intake of coffee, colas, teas, or herbal supplements) with your health care provider prior to any procedures or examinations involving heart function. However, when Dipyridamole is used on a regular basis to prevent blood clots and strokes, an interaction with Caffeine is not expected.
    • Notes for Professionals: Methylxanthines, through antagonism of adenosine and thus pharmacologic-induced coronary vasodilation, have been associated with false-negative results during dipyridamole-thallium 201 stress testing. It is recommended that caffeine be discontinued for at least 24 hours prior to stress testing. An interaction is not expected when methylxanthines are used concomitantly with the chronic dipyridamole therapy.
