Sucralfate 1g, Oral tablet
• Interaction: Enteral Feedings• Severity: Mild• Notes for Consumers: Sucralfate tablets and suspensions should be taken on an empty stomach. Do not take sucralfate tablets or suspensions at the same time as Enteral feedings (examples: Boost, Ensure, Jevity, Sustical and others). Enteral feedings are not compatible with Sucralfate. If administered together, a gooey substance may form which may cause stomach or bowel blockage. Such interactions are very rare. However, to avoid this interaction, take Sucralfate on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before taking any nutritional supplement beverages by mouth or down a tube.• Notes for Professionals: The risk of bezoar formation may be increased when sucralfate is combined with enteral feedings; additionally, continuous enteral feedings have been reported to interfere with the therapeutic efficacy of sucralfate for selected indications. When sucralfate is given via a feeding tube, careful attention to proper administration technique is recommended. In patients receiving continuous enteral feedings, the selection of an alternative agent to sucralfate may be warranted.
