CAPLYTA

LUMATEPERONE (LOO ma TEP e rone) treats schizophrenia and bipolar depression. It works by adjusting levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain, chemicals that help regulate mood and thoughts. It belongs to a group of medications called atypical antipsychotics.

This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.

Take this medication by mouth with water. Take it as directed on the prescription label at the same time every day. You can take it with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, take it with food. Keep taking this medication unless your care team tells you to stop. Stopping it too quickly can cause serious side effects. It can also make your condition worse.
A special MedGuide will be given to you by the pharmacist with each prescription and refill. Be sure to read this information carefully each time.
Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. Special care may be needed.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

Do not take this medicine with any of the following medications:
-metoclopramide
This medicine may also interact with the following medications:
-antihistamines for allergy, cough, and cold
-aprepitant
-armodafinil
-bosentan
-carbamazepine
-certain antibiotics like ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, nafcillin
-certain antifungals like fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole
-certain antivirals for HIV or hepatitis
-certain medicines for anxiety or sleep
-certain medicines for depression like amitriptyline, fluoxetine, nefazodone, sertraline
-cyclosporine
-fluvoxamine
-general anesthetics like halothane, isoflurane, methoxyflurane, propofol
-grapefruit juice
-levodopa or other medicines for Parkinson's disease
-medicines for blood pressure
-medicines for seizures like phenytoin
-medicines that relax muscles for surgery
-modafinil
-narcotic medicines for pain
-phenothiazines like chlorpromazine, prochlorperazine, thioridazine
-pioglitazone
-prednisone
-probenecid
-rifampin
-St. John's wort
-valproic acid

This list may not describe all possible interactions. Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some items may interact with your medicine.

Visit your care team for regular checks on your progress. Tell your care team if symptoms do not start to get better or if they get worse. Do not stop taking except on your care team's advice. You may develop a severe reaction. Your care team will tell you how much medication to take.
Watch for new or worsening thoughts of suicide or depression. This includes sudden changes in mood, behaviors, or thoughts. These changes can happen at any time but are more common in the beginning of treatment or after a change in dose. Call your care team right away if you experience these thoughts or worsening depression.
This medication may raise blood sugar. The risk may be higher in patients who already have diabetes. Ask your care team what you can do to lower your risk of diabetes while taking this medication.
You may get dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this medication affects you. Do not stand or sit up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. This lowers the risk of dizzy or fainting spells. Alcohol may interfere with the effect of this medication. Avoid alcoholic drinks.
This medication may cause dry eyes and blurred vision. If you wear contact lenses you may feel some discomfort. Lubricating drops may help. See your eye doctor if the problem does not go away or is severe.
This medication can cause problems with controlling your body temperature. It can lower the response of your body to cold temperatures. If possible, stay indoors during cold weather. If you must go outdoors, wear warm clothes. It can also lower the response of your body to heat. Do not overheat. Do not over-exercise. Stay out of the sun when possible. If you must be in the sun, wear cool clothing. Drink plenty of water. If you have trouble controlling your body temperature, call your care team right away.
This medication may make it more difficult to get pregnant or father a child. Talk to your care team if you are concerned about your fertility.
Women should inform their prescriber if they wish to become pregnant or think they might be pregnant. Talk to your care team or pharmacist for more information. Do not breast-feed an infant while taking this medication.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:
-Allergic reactions—skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
-Confusion
-Fever or chills, sore throat
-High blood sugar—increased thirst or amount of urine, unusual weakness or fatigue, blurry vision
-Inability to keep still
-Low blood pressure—dizziness, feeling faint or lightheaded, blurry vision
-Neuroleptic malignant syndrome—confusion, fast or irregular heartbeat, high fever, increased sweating or stiff muscles
-Problems with balance, talking, walking
-Seizures
-Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg
-Thoughts of suicide or self-harm, worsening mood, feelings of depression
-Trouble breathing
-Trouble swallowing
-Uncontrollable movements of the arms, face, head, mouth, neck, or upper body
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report these to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):
-Drowsiness
-Dry mouth
-Nausea
-Tiredness

Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Get rid of any unused medication after the expiration date.
To get rid of medications that are no longer needed or have expired:
-Take the medication to a medication take-back program. Check with your pharmacy or law enforcement to find a location.
-If you cannot return the medication, check the label or package insert to see if the medication should be thrown out in the garbage or flushed down the toilet. If you are not sure, ask your care team. If it is safe to put it in the trash, take the medication out of the container. Mix the medication with cat litter, dirt, coffee grounds, or other unwanted substance. Seal the mixture in a bag or container. Put it in the trash.
