BUPROPION (byoo PROE pee on) treats depression. It increases norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain, hormones that help regulate mood. It belongs to a group of medications called NDRIs.
Bupropion Hydrochloride 75mg, Oral tablet
Tobacco
· Severity: Moderate
· Notes for Consumers: In general, continuing to smoke tobacco along with bupropion treatment may increase the risk of high blood pressure. If you are taking Bupropion to help you stop smoking, you should pick a date to stop smoking by the second week of your Bupropion treatment. Some people are prescribed a combination of Bupropion with Nicotine replacement therapy (like Nicotine patches) to stop smoking; in this case, you should stop Tobacco smoking before you start using the Nicotine treatment.
· Notes for Professionals: Tobacco contains nicotine as one of its active components, but it is unclear if continuing to smoke concurrently with bupropion use increases the risk of blood pressure elevation. Bupropion has not been reported to interact pharmacokinetically with tobacco when used as monotherapy for smoking cessation; however, when bupropion is used as monotherapy, patients should schedule a date to stop tobacco smoking during the second week of taking bupropion. If the patient is prescribed a combination of bupropion with nicotine replacement therapy (like Nicotine patches) to stop smoking; then the patient should stop Tobacco smoking before starting to use the nicotine replacement therapy. Monitor blood pressure during smoking cessation treatment.

Alcohol
· Severity: Major
· Notes for Consumers: Alcoholic beverages should be limited or avoided while taking Bupropion. You may feel drowsy or more tired when taking these drugs together, or side effects from Bupropion may get worse if you take Alcohol. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how these drugs affect you. If you frequently drink alcoholic beverages, discuss the use of Bupropion with your health care provider.
· Notes for Professionals: Bupropion is associated with a dose-related risk of seizures. Both ethanol abuse and abrupt discontinuation of ethanol have been associated with seizures and fatalities, and may increase the risk of seizures and/or neuropsychiatric events with bupropion treatment. The use of ethanol or the abrupt discontinuation of ethanol should be avoided in patients taking bupropion. During post-marketing use of bupropion, some patients who were drinking alcohol reported reduced alcohol tolerance.

Caffeine-containing Foods/Beverages
· Severity: Moderate
· Notes for Consumers: Side effects from Bupropion may get worse if you consume large quantities of caffeine. Side effects such as nervousness, irritability, difficulty with sleep, increased blood pressure, tremor, or seizures may get worse if you take Bupropion and an excessive amount of caffeine. Try to limit Caffeine intake during Bupropion use. Many non-prescription medicines and weight loss aids may contain caffeine, so read labels carefully. Examples of foods and beverages containing caffeine include coffee, teas, colas, energy drinks, chocolate, and some herbal or dietary supplements.
· Notes for Professionals: Bupropion is associated with a dose-related risk of seizures. Excessive use of psychostimulants, including caffeine, is associated with an increased seizure risk and may increase this risk during the concurrent use of bupropion. Carefully consider a patient's caffeine intake from all sources, including medicines. Monitor for irritability, tremor, increased blood pressure, insomnia and seizures. Many non-prescription medicines and weight loss aids may contain caffeine and patients should read labels carefully. Examples of foods and beverages containing caffeine include coffee, teas, colas, energy drinks, chocolate, and some herbal or dietary supplements. Patients should be advised to limit excessive caffeine intake during bupropion therapy.
