• Interaction: Caffeine-containing Foods/Beverages• Severity: Major• Notes for Consumers: Caffeine may decrease the actions of Adenosine. Discuss your Caffeine intake (including intake of coffee, colas, teas, or herbal supplements) with your healthcare provider prior to any procedures or examinations involving heart function. Avoid caffeine prior these procedures.• Notes for Professionals: Larger doses of adenosine may be required or adenosine may not be effective in the presence of methylxanthines. The effects of adenosine are antagonized by methylxanthines. When used for diagnostic purposes, instruct patients to avoid caffeine-containing foods/beverages for at least 5 half-lives prior to the imaging study. -

• Interaction: Tobacco• Severity: Major• Notes for Consumers: Avoid Tobacco products prior to heart-related studies or heart stress tests. Discuss your drug regimen and social history with your health care provider prior to any heart-related procedures. Although these drugs can interact, generally, Adenosine is only used in a hospital or clinic. The effects of Adenosine may be increased with Tobacco use. Your prescriber will carefully monitor your condition if you receive these agents together.• Notes for Professionals: Nicotine has been reported to enhance the cardiovascular effects of adenosine; an increase in angina-like chest pains, heart rate or a decrease in blood pressure may be noted. While no special cautions are recommended when adenosine is used therapeutically to treat supraventricular tachycardia, it may be advisable for patients to avoid nicotine products or tobacco prior to electrophysiologic studies or stress testing where adenosine will be administered.
