FERRIC MALTOL (FER ik MAL tol) treats low levels of iron in your body (iron deficiency anemia). Iron is a mineral that plays an important role in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.

This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.
Take this medication by mouth with a glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Do not cut, crush or chew this medication. Swallow the capsules whole. Take this medication on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food. Do not take with food. Avoid taking antacids within 2 hours of taking this medication. It is best to separate these medications by at least 2 hours. Take your medication at regular intervals. Do not take it more often than directed. Do not stop taking except on your care team's advice.
Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. Special care may be needed.
Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

Use iron supplements only as directed by your care team. Visit your care team for regular check-ups. You will need important blood work while you are taking this medication. It may take 3 to 6 months of therapy to treat low iron levels.
Do not use iron longer than prescribed, and do not take a higher dose than recommended. Long-term use may cause excess iron to build-up in the body.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Even small amounts of iron can be harmful to a child.
Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
